Why am I unable to use CIP or heartbeat adapters as bridged interfaces in Container Station?

Last modified date: 2025-05-26

Applicable Products

Container Station 3.1.0 versions supporting QuTS hero High Availability (HA)

Scenario

In QuTS hero HA environments, the Cluster IP (CIP) and Heartbeat adapters are reserved exclusively for HA system communication. These adapters are managed by HA Manager and are not available for Virtual Switch creation or use as bridged interfaces in Container Station.

Virtual switch bridging requires exclusive control of the underlying physical network interface. Since adapters assigned to HA operations are actively used for failover, heartbeat communication, and cluster management, they cannot be reallocated for container networking. This separation ensures continuous and reliable HA system functionality without network conflicts.

Workaround

To use bridge mode networking for containers in an HA environment, you must install additional identical physical network adapters not assigned to HA roles. These can then be configured for Virtual Switch creation and bridge mode operation within Container Station.

Note
On NAS models with limited physical network interfaces, this may not be feasible. QNAP is aware of this limitation, and support for using the CIP adapter as a bridged interface is under consideration for a future software update.
