Best-in-class NAS remote access and network security solution

To protect your NAS from malicious attacks, QNAP provides QVPN and myQNAPcloud Link that enables secure remote access to your NAS. QHora, the next-generation SD-WAN router, takes security of multi-site NAS connections to another level – assisting small and medium-sized businesses in efficiently implementing cloud orchestration for today’s remote working needs.

The hidden dangers of exposing your NAS IP addresses to the Internet

Before directly connecting your NAS to the Internet for easy and convenient remote access, you should understand that your NAS IP address may become accessible and open to potential attack. Based on QNAP’s statistics, most cyber criminals attack networks through the public IP addresses. To prevent potential attacks and to preserve your security, we strongly recommend that you do not connect your NAS to the Internet this way.

Minimize network security threats using NAT

1. First, put your QNAP NAS behind a NAT (Network Address Translation) router and firewall. The NAT enables private network security by hiding the actual IP address used in the private network from users outside the firewall.
2. Secondly, unless you are proficient in setting up and maintaining network security, it is also not recommended to enable Port Forwarding, UPnP, and DMZ.

Secure remote access to NAS with an encrypted connection

A virtual private network (VPN) allows secure access to network resources and services across public networks. To access your QNAP NAS from the Internet, first establish a VPN connection to your router, and then connect to the QNAP NAS via VPN. You can also enable the QVPN service directly on the NAS or utilize myQNAPcloud Link for NAS remote connection.

More features that help protect your data

QNAP NAS is loaded with flexible privilege settings and security measures. Besides IP blocking and HTTPS connectivity, there are more apps that help ensure an optimal level of NAS protection against threats like malware and hackers.

  • 2-step verification

When activated, anyone who logs in to your QNAP NAS must enter a one-time verification code after their username and password.

  • Advanced folder permissions

Easily manage folder permissions, specifying read, read/write, and deny access of individual users to each folder and subfolder.

  • QuFirewall protection

Supports IPv6, firewall access lists, and GeoIP filtering to restrict access based on geographical locations for higher NAS network security.

  • Superior security with QVPN

Besides creating a VPN client that connects to a remote server to access contents or services, QVPN also allows using QNAP NAS as a VPN server.

  • Security Center

Checks for weaknesses and proactively detects NAS status, unusual file activity and potential security threats. Security Center also offers instant protective measures against vulnerabilities to safeguard your system and data.

  • Malware Remover

Regularly scan your QNAP NAS using the latest malware definitions. If infected files are detected, they will be immediately removed to ensure NAS data security.

  • TeamViewer remote access

The TeamViewer app enables remote management and connectivity to multiple NAS devices from a Windows® PC, providing a secure remote access solution without requiring complex VPN settings.
