Why QNAP
Business NAS
uses ZFS
Because we know that enterprises need:

  • Increased adoption of all-flash storage that makes SSD consumption key to IT costs.
  • Digital transformation driven by Big Data analysis, requiring petabyte storage capacity.
  • Real-time disaster recovery that is essential to business up-time and competitiveness.
  • Storing and backing up massive amounts of critical data without delay.
  • Uncompromised data integrity to ensure the accuracy and reliability of business data.

Key ZFS advantages

  • Efficient data reduction technology

Inline data deduplication, compression, and compaction.

  • Breakthrough huge capacity

Up to petabyte capacity per shared folder.

  • Instant snapshots and real-time SnapSync

    Near-limitless and lightweight snapshots.

  • The fastest compression algorithm

    LZ4 suites low-latency and high-performance storage.

  • Powerful self-healing

Protects against silent data corruption, ensuring data integrity and reliability.

Power #1

Efficient data reduction technology

Inline data deduplication is block-based and runs before data is written to storage. This greatly optimizes storage usage while significantly decreasing storage capacity requirements. Coupled with inline compression and inline compaction technologies, ZFS significantly reduces the overall storage footprint - especially helpful for increasing SSD storage efficiency when highly-repetitive data or massive small files are generated. All-flash solutions thus achieve higher cost efficiency while improving both random write performance and SSD lifespan.

Power #2

Up to petabyte capacity per shared folder

The 128-bit ZFS filesystem has huge capacity potential and supports native handling of standard RAID levels and additional ZFS RAID layouts (RAID Z). ZFS-based QNAP storage solutions provide up to 5 PB capacity for individual shared folders, enabling enterprises to tackle storage-demanding applications including Big Data analysis, edge computing, and AI. Designed to deal with petabytes of data, RAID Z quickly handles creating ready-to-use high-capacity RAID.

Power #3

Instant snapshots and real-time SnapSync

ZFS supports up to 65,536 snapshots for iSCSI LUN and shared folders to accomplish well-rounded snapshot versioning. If 1 snapshot is created every hour, 24 snapshots per day, then up to 7 years of snapshots can be created without needing to delete any! Copy-on-write technology makes snapshot creation almost instantaneous without affecting ongoing data writing. Recovering with snapshots does not interrupt ongoing system services, realizing highly-efficient backup and disaster recovery. The advanced block-based real-time SnapSync ensures that the primary NAS and the secondary NAS always keep the same data, providing the strongest support for nonstop business operations and helping users remove the risk of data loss!

Power #4

The fastest compression algorithm

LZ4 is a lossless compression algorithm, providing extremely fast compression and decompression speeds. In business environments that require data storage speeds of over 100 MB/s, LZ4 is an ideal choice for low-latency and high-performance IO. Data will first go through inline compression before stored into ZFS-based NAS disks – providing greater storage utilization – especially in applications that requires data to be frequently compressed and quickly decompressed (such as virtualization). Alongside deduplication, it shows greater overall data reduction.

Power #5

Powerful self-healing

Data integrity is key to the reliability of applications and databases. As SSD adoption grows, businesses must prepare for the greater risk of data loss due to the difficulty in recovering data from a dead SSD. Designed with a focus on data integrity, ZFS uses end-to-end checksums to detect and correct silent data corruption caused by hardware defects, bugs in firmware or metadata errors. If an integrity violation is detected, ZFS automatically repairs the damage using data from another mirror before the data is passed to applications. WORM (Write Once, Read Many Times) is also supported to ensure that data, once written, cannot be modified.

QNAP backup solution
use cases

If you…

Demand strict data synchronization for critical data backup, use Real-time SnapSync

Real-time SnapSync immediately synchronizes changes to data with the destination storage. Each time data is written to the source, it is also identically written to the destination. The multi-version snapshot files created by the primary NAS can also be synced to the secondary NAS. If the primary NAS goes offline, IT staff can simply adjust the privilege settings of the secondary NAS for continuous operations, leading to no data loss. SnapSync requires the primary and secondary NAS to be on the same network (round trip latency < 10ms). Deployment costs may be higher, but RPO is minimal to achieve real-time disaster recovery.

SnapSync is supported by QNAP NAS models featuring the QuTS hero (4.5.2 or later) and QES ( v2.1.1 v11 or later) operating systems. These NAS can be paired with each other to provide the perfect backup storage solution.

To ensure successful synchronization of folder & file permission settings, it is strongly recommended that the SnapSync-paired NAS systems are deployed in an AD/LDAP compliant domain environment to prevent inconsistent system UIDs (especially when the paired NAS includes a QuTS hero NAS and a QES NAS).

If you…

Want to mitigate the impact of Ransomware attacks, use Snapshots and versioning

ZFS provides lightweight, block-based snapshots that do not impact storage performance when created. Snapshot Replica replicates snapshot files to the Snapshot Vault on the backup NAS for version control and management. Snapshot Replica is cost-efficient with the support of multi-version snapshots. RPO is hourly (1 snapshot can be created every hour continuously for 7 years without deleting any), and snapshot files can be directly recovered and used in the backup NAS.

In contrast to Real-time SnapSync, time of data recovery taken by Snapshot Replica includes the time of restoring snapshots

If you…

Need the simplest way to realize 3-2-1 back plans, use HBS 3

Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS) integrates file backup/restore and sync functions to local, remote QNAP NAS/servers, or cloud storage. It supports QuDedup technology that eliminates redundant data at the source for reducing backup size and storage and converts deduplicated data into a small, unpreviewable QNAP deduplication file format (.qfdd). If the backup destination does not support inline data deduplication as QuTS hero NAS, QuDedup can still reduce the file size and required storage of backup data. HBS provides simple and inexpensive backup and restoration for all QNAP NAS users.

QuTS hero NAS
